Watched in theater!  Really good character study, but it's also a sort-of a
“culture study” of nomads.  I don't know if “culture study” is a proper genre of
film like character study is, but this definitely is one.  Really good and
thoughtful film.  No /really/ stunning or original shots, but I felt that the
entire film was really beautiful.  I gotta watch /Three Billboards Outside
Ebbing, Missouri/ (2017) again too.

Opens with news footage, not a great start.  Bland shots and lighting in opening
shot, plus bad CRT/tape effect on “period” footage.  It's shot in that “style”
that's flat and has no depth of field, and is simultaneously oversaturated but
with a grey and bland color palette, the entire look is horrible.  Not that deep
focus is bad, Superia (2018) used it and a muted color palette superbly, but
this film just does it bad.  Also, when you have a cold open, you shouldn't need
a countdown to it, it should be obvious when you get back to that point.  Cold
war thrillers are one of my favorite settings, and this had a decent nucleus of
a plot idea, and they fuck it up so bad.  The only thing they do better than
most other films like this is have the Russians actually speaking Russian.

Iraq war documentaries are like holocaust documentaries: horrifying, but
overdone.  Decent comparatively, lots of original footage.  I'd rather have
rewatched Only the Dead (2015) though.  It is funny how much credit they have
the U.S. for some devious plan in the Iraq War though.  They make it look like
the U.S. had this grand plan, but the U.S. had /no/ idea what to do other than
kill Saddam.  We did stay around for far too long, and there's no doubt we
helped cause the civil war, but there was by no means some grand plan to
destabilize the country, it's just pure incompetence.

A standard revenge plot, with some interesting points I suppose. The first half
(at least) of the film is "if you just did this then it'd be over," but of
course it's one of those situations where the answer is "but if we did that
there wouldn't be a movie." The main(?) cop has an arc in the last five minutes
of the film which is pretty annoying because he had one bit of development at
the beginning, no arc or development, then at the very end he has a character
arc. The story does get bonus points for having the bad guy get "Comrade
Detective-d" at the end though. Enjoyable, but in a "you aren't supposed to
think about this movie" sort of way. Feels like Saw, where they don't have a
huge budget so you shoot one-half in a single set, another quarter in the woods
for free, and then at the beginning and end you have a real location. Also, I
/KNOW/ I've seen the ending shot of this movie in a really good art film, but I
can't recall what it is.

first I thought they got permission to use footage from 1917, but no, they used
a few clips from the trailer at the beginning and that's it. I also love the
flash cards version of WWI, it's like being in AP World History again!
